Description

This book tells the story of one of the most brilliant figures of Russian culture - the actor of the Maly Theater Mikhail Semyonovich Shchepkin, the founder of the Russian realist school of dramatic art. His life is a page of Russian history: he came from the serfs, and achieved his freedom only after he had already become a recognized master on the provincial stage. He was thirty-three years old at the time, with a family and three children. In the spring of 1823 he moved to Moscow and was enrolled in the company of the imperial theaters. His first roles on the stage of the Maly Theater immediately brought him fame as a great comic actor. The best Russian playwrights dedicated their plays to him. He became the first performer in Moscow of the roles of Famusov in "Woe from Wit," the Mayor in "The Government Inspector," the Baron in "The Covetous Knight," Kuzovkin in "The Hanger-On," and others. He was closely connected with Pushkin and Gogol, Belinsky and Herzen, Turgenev and Aksakov, Shevchenko and Ostrovsky. His whole life was one of inspired service to the theater and to his people. His name is inseparable from the golden age of Russian culture and from the subsequent history of Russia.
