Description
For the first time in research on the history of the Mongol Empire, the book reveals the essence of four calendar festivals, to which the coronations of khans and the kurultais were timed, and to which rulers from the lands subject to the Mongols were obliged to come. The fluid hierarchy of power rested on symbols and rituals. The reverse side of the festive rituals was execution. Treason was punished by dismemberment. The empire gave rise to a recognizable set of symbols. The richly illustrated catalogue presents more than a hundred artifacts. In the author's view, festivals, executions, and symbols of power are interconnected elements of a complex political game, at the root of which one can discern a conflict of interests between the nomadic aristocracy and the civil administration.
