Description

Karl Weule (29 February 1864 - 19 April 1926) was a German ethnographer and historian of primitive society. From 1907 until the end of his life he was director of the Ethnographic Museum in Leipzig. Main works: "The Culture of the Cultureless Peoples" ("Die Kultur der Kulturlosen", 1910), "Elements of Human Culture" ("Kulturelemente der Menschheit", 1911). All the primary elements of culture can very easily be found in all forms of our economy and society, in religion, art and science, in customs and traditions. Even our technology, unquestionably a triumph of the white race, our ornaments and clothing, and finally our dwellings - all of this still rests even now on those basic primary elements that were worked out by our ancestors in a hard struggle for existence. In art, through mythological generalization, primitive man's knowledge of nature, of his place in it, and of the best and most favorable ways for man to interact with the surrounding world, was recorded.
