Description
The story of Heloise and Abelard is a story of exalted love, lived through an age like that of Tristan and Isolde. It has been retold so many times, especially in the 18th-19th centuries, that in some ways it has even lost its authenticity. And now, for the first time in many years, the well-known French scholar of the Middle Ages Regine Pernoud has retold it, basing her account on the genuine correspondence of the protagonists, who moved from an all-conquering passion to true sanctity. This extraordinary story took place at a time when an educational establishment appeared on the hill of Saint Genevieve that became the prototype of the famous Sorbonne, when the Romanesque style reached its peak in architecture and Gothic art began to emerge, when the development of logic contributed to the appearance of the great medieval theological treatises that had an indelible influence on the worldview of their contemporaries.
