Description

Dovletmammed Azadi (Turkmen: Döwletmämmet Azady; 1695 or 1700 - around 1760) was a Turkmen poet, scholar and Sufi. He was the father of the poet Magtymguly. His principal work is the didactic poem 'The Sermon of Azadi' ('Vagzi-Azad,' Turkmen: Wagzy-azat), written in the form of a mesnevi, about a just ruler, about the development of agriculture and trade, about scholars, and about the observance of moral norms. The language of the poem is archaic and abounds in Arabic-Persian and Chagatai elements.
