Description

Peter Scholl-Latour is one of the world's leading political commentators of recent decades, possessing a unique qualification for analyzing the manifestations of the disintegration of world empires. His books on the Islamic revolutions in Tehran, Baghdad, and Algiers have already shown him to be not only a chronicler but also a bold predictor of future events. His new book is devoted to a "world in the process of disintegration". It is impossible to predict when the process of atomization will stop, having engulfed the world from the Hindu Kush to the Atlas Mountains, as well as the states of the Caucasus and the former Yugoslavia. In his new studies, Scholl-Latour relied entirely on the sharpness of his observation: he reports, narrates, comments, and refuses to draw hasty conclusions from events. In reports, reflections, and images of memory, he records what he experienced during his travels: during meetings with Honecker and Gorbachev, meetings with Afghan mujahideen, with the leaders of the Khmer Rouge, or with the Druze prince Walid Jumblatt. Again and again he returns to the centuries-old past.
